LMNL office crafts earth-toned studio shed in Dutch Garden
2023-09-07

Studio Shed, an architectural creation by LMNL Office, graces the garden of a residence in Brabant, the Netherlands, defined by its earth-toned tiles. This garden studio, commissioned by the homeowners of a property also envisioned by LMNL Office, boasts a deliberately uncomplicated design realised through the use of prefabricated timber panels.
Erica Chladová and Robert van der Pol, the founders of the studio, noted, "The contemporary aesthetic recalls the design elements from the primary house. Each design decision is carefully considered for function, simplicity, and adaptability," they conveyed to Dezeen.
This rectangular and compact structure, measuring 7.5 by 13 meters, serves to anchor the existing garden while offering protection against south-westerly winds. Lush perennial beds line the space between the shed and the house, concealing it from street view.
The shed itself is meticulously crafted using a timber frame and prefabricated timber panels filled with natural wood-fibre insulation, allowing the building to breathe. This choice of materials pays homage to the "typical wooden sheds of the area" adorned with horizontal wooden sidings, according to the studio.
The earthy clay tiles grace both the roof and walls of Studio Shed, mirroring the bricks used in the primary house. The studio elaborated, "[We selected] a soft earthen colour to complement the IJssel brick, and grey accents to harmonize with the garden's paving."
Accoya wood, pre-stained to ensure uniform aging, clads the gable end walls of the shed, a material also found on the verandas encircling the main house.
Internally, the ground floor of Studio Shed encompasses a kitchen and a bathroom adjoining a carport concealed by garage doors. A staircase within a double-height void ascends to a bedroom and studio space on the first floor.
