Kanpur Metro's TBM 'Nana' achieves third major breakthrough

Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) S93 has achieved yet another significant milestone in the ambitious Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project, marking its third successful tunnel breakthrough at the Bada Chauraha Station. This achievement involved the completion of the up-line tunnel, stretching approximately 510 meters from Naveen Market to Bada Chauraha. This accomplishment is a vital part of the broader plan, which encompasses a total of 8 breakthroughs within the 3.619 km Package KNPCC-05 section, connecting the Permat Ramp to Nayaganj Station.

The TBM responsible for this remarkable feat is the Terratec TBM, affectionately referred to as "Nana" in honor of Nana Saheb Peshwa. Nana boasts a diameter of 6.52 meters and a length of 120 meters.

Nana TBM embarked on its journey from the New Market Metro Station on July 15, 2023. In an astonishingly short span of 57 days, Nana successfully installed 362 rings, ultimately reaching the 510-meter long 'up-line tunnel' at Bada Chauraha. The next phase for Nana involves being disassembled from the Bada Chauraha Metro Station and then lowered into the launching shaft at MacRobertganj.

Meanwhile, another TBM, known as 'Tatya,' is actively engaged in constructing the 'down-line' tunnel between New Market and Bada Chauraha. To date, Tatya has completed approximately 300 meters of tunnel, involving the placement of 210 rings. Completion of the tunnel construction work is imminent. Simultaneously, preparations are in progress for the launch of the fourth TBM, which will create an underground track from Kanpur Central Station to Nayaganj.
