CMA CGM and Maersk join forces for green fuels

CMA CGM and Maersk, the container shipping giants, announced that they intend to collaborate in their efforts to reduce emissions in the sector. They expressed their commitment to supporting the utilisation of methanol and contributing to research on potential fuels such as ammonia.

The shipping industry is currently faced with the challenge of determining which fuels and vessel technologies to adopt on a large scale as part of their objective to achieve net zero emissions by around the middle of the century.

Maersk, a Danish company, has placed a significant focus on what is commonly referred to as "green methanol." Just last week, they unveiled plans for the establishment of a new company dedicated to fuel production.

On the other hand, CMA CGM, based in France, has opted for gas-powered vessels and has also placed orders for ships capable of using methanol.

In a joint statement, CMA CGM and Maersk stated, "While these two fuel streams currently appear to be the most developed among the existing solutions, both companies anticipate that the future fuel composition in the shipping industry will incorporate other options that will undergo development in the years to come."

Their partnership will notably involve efforts to establish operational standards for green methanol-powered vessels and accelerate the readiness of ports to facilitate methanol refuelling for ships.
