Chennai Metro Phase-II: Greenways road tunnel construction underway

Construction has commenced on the tunnel for Phase-II of the Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) project, spanning the area between Greenways Road and Mandaveli. Greenways Road plays a pivotal role in the 116-km Phase-II initiative, specifically in Corridor-III, which extends from Madhavaram to SIPCOT, encompassing areas like Perambur, Purasawalkam, Sterling Road, Adyar, and Sholinganallur.

Upon completion, one of the significant stretches set to open in 2028 is the route from Greenways Road to Thirumayilai via Mandaveli. To facilitate this, four tunnel boring machines (TBM) are being employed. Two of these TBMs are dedicated to constructing a tunnel from Greenways Road to Adyar junction, while the other two are tasked with tunneling from Greenways Road to Mandaveli. Each TBM covers approximately 750 meters at a depth of around 17 meters.

The tunnelling process commenced in February 2023 with the TBM named ?Kaveri? heading towards Adyar. Recently, another TBM named ?Noyyal? was launched at Greenways Road to tunnel towards Mandaveli. Additionally, a third TBM named ?Vaigai? is slated to commence work in the coming weeks.

Furthermore, the selection of a contractor to build the stations has been recently finalised. Concurrently, progress continues steadily in the other two corridors of the project: Light House to Poonamallee (Corridor-IV) and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (Corridor-V). Construction activities in these corridors are advancing at a consistent pace.
