Delhi Expands EV Charging to Outer Areas

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to extend its electric vehicle (EV) charging network into outer Delhi areas. This initiative aims to promote the use of electric autos and vehicles for last-mile connectivity. MCD plans to establish more charging stations in regions like Narela, Najafgarh, and Rohini, which currently have limited EV infrastructure. Power distribution companies and public sector undertakings (PSUs) have been tasked with identifying suitable sites for these new charging facilities, some of which will offer battery swapping services.

While MCD has already allocated space for 584 charging stations, with 200 currently operational (including 25 battery-swapping stations), most of them are concentrated in south, central, or east Delhi. Recognizing the need for a more comprehensive EV charging network in outlying areas, MCD aims to boost EV adoption in these regions.

Notably, Najafgarh already has charging facilities at 32 locations, while Rohini has 12. Allotments for Narela are in the pipeline. MCD is also planning dedicated EV charging hubs to encourage cab aggregators to deploy more electric cabs. These hubs will accommodate simultaneous charging for 10-15 cabs, contributing to the wider adoption of electric vehicles in the city.

Additionally, MCD intends to assess the effectiveness of existing charging stations before granting further permissions for new ones. All permissions and allotments adhere to MCD's unified policy, aligning with its efforts to promote eco-friendly transportation. Electric vehicles offer cost advantages, with operating costs of less than Re 1 per kilometre, making them a cost-effective and environmentally friendly choice compared to hydrocarbon fuels.
