Tirupati to roll out first-ever electric 2-decker bus

The sacred city of Tirupati is set to revolutionize its public transportation with the upcoming introduction of an air-conditioned electric double-decker bus. This pioneering move marks a significant step towards fostering eco-friendly urban mobility in the region. Tirupati will become the first city in Andhra Pradesh and the second in South India, following Hyderabad, to operate these distinctive double-decker buses.

The electric double-decker bus is scheduled to commence its services in Tirupati by the end of October, with plans for expanding the fleet after successful trial runs. Valued at Rs 2 crore, the electric double-decker bus arrived in Tirupati last month and is currently undergoing trial operations.

The Municipal Corporation, under the auspices of the Tirupati Smart City Corporation Ltd, which is part of the Central Government's Smart City project, procured the electric bus. This environmentally-conscious initiative is aimed at reducing emissions and promoting sustainable transportation options. The bus was acquired from Switch Mobility, the electric commercial vehicle division of Ashok Leyland.

The introduction of this electric double-decker bus not only signifies a milestone for Tirupati but also aligns with broader efforts to enhance green transportation infrastructure and reduce the environmental impact of urban mobility. This initiative is expected to set a precedent for cleaner and more sustainable public transportation systems in the region.
