KDMC launches special survey after building collapses in Dombivli city

In a recent tragic incident in Dombivli city, one unstable building collapsed, resulting in the loss of two lives and injuring one person. Another building, Laxmi Niwas, collapsed as well. Fortunately, many residents were able to evacuate in time, thanks to a vigilant resident who noticed a crack in the structure and alerted others.

Upon investigation, officials discovered that Laxmi Niwas, the collapsed building, was not listed as a dangerous structure. This revelation prompted the KDMC to initiate a fresh survey.

Under the directive of the Municipal Commissioner, specialised teams have been formed in all 10 wards of KDMC. These teams consist of experts including a Sub-Engineer from the Construction Department, a Surveyor from the Town Planning Department, a Section Clerk from the Property Department, and a Station/Sub-station Officer from the Fire Department. Their primary mission is to identify potentially hazardous buildings and take measures to mitigate the risks of collapse.

These teams possess the necessary technical expertise to accurately assess the safety of buildings within the municipal area. Mangesh Chitale, the Additional Municipal Commissioner of KDMC, emphasised, "The teams have been instructed to begin their work immediately and provide daily reports to the additional commissioner, who will then compile a consolidated report for headquarters."

Chitale further highlighted, "The recent collapses in Dombivli involved one building that had been previously identified as dangerous through a prior survey. However, the other building was not on the list of hazardous structures, prompting KDMC to initiate this new survey."
