Massive Disruptions in Mumbai's Western Railway

A 29-day block on Mumbai's Western Railway, which commenced on October 7, is set to result in the full or partial cancellation of over 3,100 suburban services and approximately 260 long-distance trains. This block is crucial for the construction of the sixth line between Khar and Goregaon railway stations. Starting from October 20, roughly 2,700 suburban services will be cancelled, with around 400 services facing partial disruption or short termination. The block's well-thought-out plan aims to minimise rail traffic disruption and passenger inconvenience, with no train cancellations during the initial 10 to 13 days, according to Sumit Thakur, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway.

The Western Railway is fast-tracking the sixth line project, covering an 8.8 km stretch between Khar and Goregaon stations. Part of this work involves the temporary closure of platform number 9 at Andheri station. Additionally, a 24-hour mega block is scheduled from 9 pm on November 19 to 9 pm on November 20 at Bandra Terminus for rail track cut-and-connect. This project is aimed at increasing the line capacity of the Mumbai suburban section, reducing congestion, improving punctuality, and enhancing train services. The Western Railway's suburban network, which operates between Churchgate and Dahanu stations, serves over 3 million commuters.
