Sikkim CM announces housing schemes for those who lost homes

Sikkim's Chief Minister, PS Tamang, made a significant announcement on Monday regarding two housing schemes aimed at aiding those who lost their homes in the devastating flash flood that wreaked havoc in the northern region of the Himalayan state. Alongside these housing initiatives, the state government will extend financial support to students affected by the calamity.

The flash flood, triggered by a cloudburst on October 4, claimed the lives of at least 38 people, with 76 individuals still reported missing, and more than 88,000 residents grappling with the aftermath. Chief Minister Tamang revealed that the government would initiate the ""Puranwas Awas Yojna"" (Rehabilitation Housing Scheme) and the ""Janta Housing Colony scheme."" These schemes are set to be presented before the Cabinet on Tuesday and subsequently put into effect.

Under the Rehabilitation Housing Scheme, the state government will facilitate land allocation and oversee the construction of houses for the beneficiaries. In a compassionate move, if an individual already possesses a plot and wishes to have a house built upon it, the government will provide the necessary support for this purpose.

Furthermore, in acknowledgment of the challenges faced by students who lost their school materials during the disaster, the state government will disburse Rs 10,000 to each affected student. An additional financial assistance of Rs 5,000 will be granted to students who are compelled to reside far from their homes due to displacement.

The implementation of these housing schemes and financial relief for students is a vital step towards assisting the victims of the flash flood in their journey towards recovery and rehabilitation. The state government's proactive response underscores its commitment to supporting those affected by this natural disaster.
