Prism logistics executes India's Largest Multimodal Cargo Project

Kolkata-based Prism Logistics accomplished what is believed to be India's most extensive long-distance multimodal transportation project. The company successfully transported 34 super heavy cargo units, each weighing up to 743 metric tons, with lengths extending to 55 meters and diameters up to 9.7 meters. This remarkable feat was achieved through a combination of sea and road transport for the upcoming Barmer refinery in Rajasthan.

The logistics contract for this monumental project is valued at over Rs 1 billion, as per tender documents examined by a media house. Prism Logistics managed the movement of super over dimensional cargo, supplied by Larsen & Toubro Ltd, in two main phases. First, the cargo was transported from Mangalore, Hazira, and Dahej to Mundra Port, operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone in Gujarat. Subsequently, the cargo was transported to the project site in Pachpadra, located in Rajasthan's Barmer district, covering a road distance of 553 kilometers.

This complex logistics operation, spanning nearly a year, was far from simple. The challenges were significant, especially considering the involvement of HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Ltd (HRRL), a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) and the Government of Rajasthan (GOR). HRRL, led by one of India's major state-run oil firms, HPCL, was overseeing the establishment of a mega oil refinery in Rajasthan?the first greenfield refinery in the country in over two decades.

The project itself entails the construction of a 9 million tonnes per annum greenfield refinery cum petrochemical complex at Pachpadra in Barmer. The marine transportation segment of the contract, involving 34 packages totaling 12,582 metric tons and 72,506 freight tons, was executed through six barge trips, ensuring a seamless and efficient transport solution.
