Delhi Metro advances towards unmanned operations on Pink, Magenta Lines

This move towards Unmanned Train Operations (UTO) emphasises the paramount importance of safety. Traditional manned metro systems are susceptible to accidents caused by human errors, such as driver fatigue and distractions. By eliminating the need for human operators, UTO systems significantly reduce the risk of accidents stemming from these factors. Automation ensures consistent operation, adherence to predefined routes, schedules, and safety protocols, enhancing passenger safety.
Additionally, UTO systems enhance efficiency by maintaining uniform speeds and acceleration, leading to a smoother ride experience, increased passenger comfort, and reduced wear and tear on both tracks and train equipment. These automated systems also allow for higher train frequencies, accommodating the growing passenger demand during peak hours without requiring additional infrastructure investments.
DMRC is also at the forefront of technological advancements, with the Indigenous Automatic Train Supervision System (i-ATS) and plans to deploy a complete Communication-Based Signalling System (CBTC). By 2025, DMRC aims to operationalize these systems, making India the sixth nation in the world to adopt this advanced technology.
Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Delhi Metro is showing signs of recovery as ridership gradually return to pre-pandemic levels. The metro witnessed a surge in ridership on September 4, reaching 71.03 lakhs, indicating a return to normalcy.
Moreover, the Delhi Metro has played a pivotal role in connecting people and empowering them to travel effortlessly across the city. It has cultivated a vital metropolitan culture, fostering growth and development in the city. DMRC is also working towards seamless connectivity with the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), ensuring an integrated multi-modal transit system in the National Capital Region (NCR). This initiative aims to simplify passenger interchanges and encourage the use of public transport without the inconvenience of multiple transfers.
