Yanmar introduces Electric Excavator Prototype

Yanmar has revealed a prototype electric work machine equipped with "advanced force control technology," capable of undertaking tasks in challenging environments such as disaster sites or even lunar surfaces. The prototype machine, which lacks a cab, is based on Yanmar's Vi025 mini excavator.

According to Yanmar, the successful implementation of force control capabilities, a challenge for traditional hydraulic systems, has been achieved. The force control function was realised using a large series elastic actuator (SEA) comprising an electric motor, reducer, and spring that can be installed on construction equipment. The objective of this technology is to automate intricate manual tasks on construction sites to address the shortage of labour.

Additionally, the prototype incorporates an articulated motor instead of a conventional electric cylinder, expanding its range of motion through electrification. This feature allows the machine to execute tasks at high altitudes, such as ceiling operations.

The Yanmar Next-Gen work machine prototype, featuring Force Control Technology, showcased the large Series Elastic Actuator (SEA) developed in collaboration with JAXA, contributing to an increased range of motion through the adoption of joint motors.

Looking ahead, Yanmar intends to conduct further testing on the prototype to ascertain practical applications for the next-generation work machine.

The SEA, a product of collaboration between Yanmar and JAXA's Space Exploration Innovation Hub Center under the Moonshot Research and Development Program, made its debut at the Construction DX Challenge 2023, organised by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism.
