Flyover construction at Thoraipakkam on OMR begins

Chennai Metro Rail Corporation (CMRL) has begun construction work on Rajiv Gandhi Salai?s first flyover (commonly known as OMR) at Thoraipakkam Junction. CMRL is currently working on the construction of piles on the extension of Thoraipakkam ? Pallavaram Radial Road, with 15 piles already completed.

Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) is overseeing the development of this project which includes the construction of four flyovers in an integrated manner with respective elevated lines. The estimated cost of this project is INR 459.32 Crore, with INR 331 Crore sanctioned by TNRDC and the remaining amount to be sanctioned by CMRL.

OMR is a part of Corridor 3 of the 116km-long Chennai Metro Rail?s Phase II, which connects Madhavaram and SIPCOT through Ayanavaram, Perambur, Thousand Lights, Royapettah, Thirumayilai, Adyar, Indira Nagar, Tiruvanmiyur, Taramani, Perungudi and Thoraipakkam. It is planned as an underground stretch from Madhavaram to Taramani and continues as an elevated corridor till SIPCOT.

The flyover will be developed at the first level, elevated at a height of 6m from the ground, whereas the Chennai Metro Rail Line will be at the second level, elevated at 18m from the ground. The authorities also announced that contracts for the work would be awarded shortly.
