India to Have Second Largest Metro System by 2026

India is set to become home to the world's second largest metro system by 2026, according to Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Speaking at the third edition of the India Metro Rail Conference, Puri highlighted the nation's rapid metro rail expansion, with a current network of 860 km across 20 cities expected to grow to 1,000 km by 2024 and further to 1,700 km by 2026. This development reflects India's commitment to modernising urban transportation, aimed at enhancing connectivity and reducing congestion in urban areas.

Puri emphasised the government's role in accelerating metro projects, driven by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of sustainable and integrated urban transport. He also noted the significant investment in metro rail infrastructure, contributing to economic growth and job creation. The minister mentioned ongoing projects in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, showcasing India's capability in executing large-scale infrastructure projects.

The conference also served as a platform for discussing innovations in metro rail technology, including automation and green energy solutions, to further improve efficiency and environmental sustainability. As India's metro rail network expands, it is expected to play a crucial role in the nation's urban development, offering a reliable and efficient mode of transport for millions of commuters.

Puri concluded by expressing confidence in India's ability to achieve this ambitious target, positioning the country as a global leader in urban transit systems.
