Madurai Corporation floats tenders for UGD work worth Rs 4.33 Bn

The Madurai Corporation has floated tenders worth Rs 4.33 billion for the construction of underground drains (UGD) in newer areas under the AMRUT scheme. Approved in November 2023, the project aims to cover 49 locations including Avaniyapuram, Thirupalai, and Viraganur.

The tenders, divided into two packages, include construction, maintenance, and operation for five years. Work is expected to start after the tender process concludes in July, with a completion timeline of 36 months, followed by a six-month trial run.

Activists have urged the corporation to address issues in core areas with outdated drainage systems to prevent blockages and overflows. They emphasise the importance of ensuring comprehensive coverage to improve sanitation across the city.
