Railways to achieve 100% electrification to become world's largest green network

"Indian Railways is going to achieve the target of #Mission100PercentElectrification soon. #MissionNetZeroCarbonEmission," the ministry tweeted on July 2.
The interim budget has allocated Rs 65 billion for on-going electrification projects. Once fully electrified, Indian Railways will become the world's largest green railway system. Many regions across India have already reached complete electrification.
Since 2014 the total investment in electrification is over Rs 464.25 billion. Significant progress has been made in shifting from diesel to electric engines. As of December 2023, Indian Railways operates 10,238 electric locomotives and 4,543 diesel locomotives.
A total of 7,188 kilometers of the rail network was electrified, including key routes such as: - Ahmedabad-Rajkot-Okha (499 km) - Bengaluru-Talguppa (371 km) - Bhatinda-Firozpur-Jalandhar (301 km)
Since the fiscal year 2014-15, over 40,000 route kilometres on the broad gauge network have been electrified, a significant increase from the 2,180 km electrified in all years before 2014.
The shift to electric traction is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 24% by 2027-28. Indian Railways aims to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2030, solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable transportation.
This initiative reflects a significant step towards sustainable development and positions Indian Railways as a global leader in green transportation solutions.
