NGT Directs Pune Authorities to Address Riverbank Debris Issue

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has instructed the Pune Municipal Corporation and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to provide explanations regarding the dumping of construction debris on riverbanks. This directive aims to address environmental concerns and protect river ecosystems from further damage.

The NGT's order comes after reports of unchecked dumping along riverbanks, which poses significant threats to local biodiversity and water quality. The tribunal emphasised the need for immediate action to prevent further ecological harm and urged the authorities to implement effective waste management practices.

Both the civic body and the MPCB have been given a deadline to submit their responses, detailing the measures taken to control debris dumping and plans for restoration of affected areas. The tribunal's focus is on ensuring accountability and promoting sustainable development practices in urban planning.

This action reflects growing awareness and concern over environmental degradation caused by construction activities. The NGT aims to enforce stricter regulations and ensure compliance to safeguard natural resources and public health.

The directive underscores the importance of collaboration between government agencies and local bodies in addressing environmental challenges. By mandating responses, the NGT seeks to initiate corrective measures and foster responsible urban development in Pune.

Overall, the tribunal's intervention highlights the critical need for sustainable waste management and proactive measures to protect the environment from the adverse impacts of urbanisation.
