North Western Railway to Install 2 MW Rooftop Solar Power

The project will involve the installation of solar panels on the rooftops of various railway buildings, including stations and administrative offices. By harnessing solar energy, the railway aims to offset a substantial portion of its electricity consumption, leading to both cost savings and environmental benefits.
The decision aligns with the Indian government's broader objectives to boost renewable energy usage and achieve ambitious climate goals. The NWR's move is part of a nationwide effort to increase the share of solar power in the energy mix of public sector enterprises.
The installation process will be carried out in phases, starting with the most feasible sites. The railway expects the project to be completed within a set timeframe, after which the solar power generated will be integrated into the existing grid. This will help in reducing reliance on conventional energy sources and cutting down greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition to environmental benefits, the project is anticipated to set a precedent for other regional railway zones and public sector units to follow suit. By adopting solar technology, North Western Railway is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency in its operations.
