Cabinet approves Phase-3 of 44.65 km Namma metro rail with 31 stations
Once Phase-3 is operational, Bengaluru's Metro Rail Network will extend to 220.20 km, significantly enhancing the city's transportation infrastructure. The project is expected to be completed by 2029 at a total cost of Rs 156.11 billion.
Phase-3 will add 44.65 km of new metro lines, connecting previously underserved areas in Bengaluru including the Peenya Industrial Area, IT hubs on Bannerghatta Road and Outer Ring Road, and various manufacturing units on Tumkuru Road and ORR. The new corridors will also link key educational institutions and healthcare facilities, improving last-mile connectivity and access to essential services across the city.
The expansion of the Metro Rail Network is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion on heavily traveled routes such as Outer Ring Road West and Magadi Road. By providing an efficient alternative to road transport, Phase-3 will reduce travel times, enhance road safety, and contribute to smoother vehicular movement.
The expansion of Bengaluru's Metro Rail Network is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions by offering a greener alternative to fossil fuel-based transportation.
Improved connectivity and reduced travel times will enhance productivity and stimulate economic growth by making it easier for individuals to reach workplaces and businesses. The construction and operation of Phase-3 will create numerous jobs across various sectors, while increased accessibility may attract investment and development in previously less accessible regions.
The expansion will offer more equitable access to public transport, benefiting diverse socio-economic groups and contributing to a higher quality of life through reduced commute times and improved access to essential services.
Multi-modal integration is planned at 10 locations, including JP Nagar, Kamakya, Mysore Road, Peenya, BEL Circle, Hebbal, Kempapura, and Hosahalli. The integration will provide seamless connectivity with existing and under-construction metro stations, BMTC bus stands, Indian Railway stations, and proposed suburban (K-RIDE) stations. Additionally, Phase-3 stations will feature dedicated bus bays, pedestrian paths, auto-rickshaw stands, and bike and cycle-sharing facilities. Parking facilities will be available at 11 key stations, and direct connectivity through foot overbridges or skywalks will be provided at two railway stations, Lottegollahali and Hebbal. (PIB.gov)
