SSE and EET Hydrogen to Build Green Hydrogen Plant at Stanlow

SSE and EET Hydrogen have partnered to develop a 40MWe green hydrogen production facility at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. Named the Gowy Green Hydrogen project, it aims to support the region's industrial decarbonisation by providing hydrogen to local industries.

The facility is part of the UK's broader goal to produce 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030 and is expected to be operational by 2028. The companies have completed feasibility studies and are advancing with design and site investigation work, with a planning application anticipated by 2025, pending a final investment decision.

Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating it complements their existing low-carbon hydrogen initiatives. He highlighted Cheshire's role in leading decarbonisation efforts in the North West.

Hannah Bronwin, Director of Business Development at SSE Thermal, emphasized the importance of scaling up green hydrogen production for decarbonising hard-to-abate industries. She noted that the Gowy Green Hydrogen project will play a crucial role in securing hydrogen production capacity and advancing the energy transition.

This collaboration is a vital step in the UK's efforts to build a clean power system and reduce emissions in industries that are challenging to decarbonise. SSE remains a key player in various hydrogen initiatives, including hydrogen storage, production, and power generation.
