Epsilon partners with S Korean firm for high-capacity Li-ion batteries

Battery material manufacturer Epsilon Advanced Materials announced that it has partnered with South Korean firm Daejoo to develop a Silicon-Graphite composite aimed at enhancing the discharge capacity of lithium-ion batteries.

Under this joint initiative, the two companies have set an ambitious goal to create materials for lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 450 - 600 mAh/g, targeting a 50 per cent increase in discharge capacity and a life span extended by thousands of cycles, according to Epsilon.

As part of this collaboration, Epsilon will supply synthetic Graphite to be utilised in Daejoo’s laboratories for the creation and assessment of Silicon-Graphite composites. In turn, Daejoo will provide samples, enabling Epsilon to customise and test Silicon monoxide-graphite composites in its own labs. The companies intend to qualify these materials with their customers to support the development of innovative battery products.

Epsilon noted that the initial phase of composite material development and evaluation is anticipated to conclude by the end of this year, after which the companies will jointly work on qualifying the material with cell manufacturers.

Epsilon’s Managing Director, Vikram Handa, stated that the collaboration is intended to accelerate both India’s and the global transition to clean energy and sustainable mobility. He emphasized the company’s commitment to pioneering advancements in battery technology through continuous R&D efforts. Handa added that upon successful completion of in-house evaluations, Epsilon would be well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of the mobility sector by delivering high-performance, safe battery solutions.

Daejoo’s Managing Director, Dae Woon Park, remarked that this partnership represents a major step in their mission to innovate and improve battery performance. He stated that collaborating with Epsilon not only strengthens Daejoo’s presence in the rapidly growing Indian market but also aligns with its global strategy to develop advanced materials tailored to meet the diverse needs of customers and markets.
