Tripura’s Solar Energy Output Grows Tenfold Since 2018
2025-01-02
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, commended Tripura’s significant strides in the non-conventional energy sector during his two-day visit to the state.
Joshi stated that Tripura’s solar energy production has increased by a factor of ten since 2018, from 2.5 MW to more than 20.5 MW under the current BJP-led government.
The minister also visited a centrally sponsored renewable energy project in Charilam village, Sepahaijala district, initiated by the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency, which provides solar-powered water pumps for farmers under the PM-KUSUM Scheme. Additionally, 35 LED solar street lighting systems have been installed in Charilam.
Highlighting India’s renewable energy achievements, Joshi noted that the country’s renewable energy capacity had reached 214 GW, with a goal of 500 GW by 2030.
He added that Tripura’s electricity tariff is approximately Rs 5 per unit for consumption above 200 units, and the installation of solar power will help reduce reliance on costly energy from gas-based plants.
Joshi also highlighted the government’s initiatives to provide free food grains to 81 crore citizens under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. He shared that in the last five years, 1.2 lakh MT of rice worth Rs 360 crore has been procured in Tripura, benefiting around 94,000 farmers.
