IISc and Tata Group to Launch Rs 5 Billion Medical School in Bengaluru
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and the Tata Group have announced a partnership to establish the Tata IISc Medical School on the IISc Bengaluru campus. As part of the collaboration, the Tata Group will contribute Rs 5 billion to support the development of the institution.
The Tata IISc Medical School is envisioned as a centre of excellence that combines basic science and engineering with clinical research and medical education. It will specialize in areas such as oncology, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, diabetes and metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, integrative medicine, and public health.
The institution will offer innovative programs, including integrated MD-PhD and dual-degree courses, aimed at training physician-scientists and medical technologists.
Students will receive interdisciplinary training across the medical school and IISc’s science and engineering laboratories, blending advanced clinical practice with scientific research. This education model is expected to serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives across India.
Expressing gratitude to the Tata Group, IISc Director Prof. G. Rangarajan stated, “After a century of contributions to science and engineering, this partnership offers a unique opportunity to pioneer new frontiers in medicine. We are committed to building affordable healthcare solutions for India and the world.”
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in advancing medical education and healthcare innovation in India.
