Amit Shah Launches Multiple Development Projects in Vadnagar

Vadnagar, one of Gujarat's oldest cities, has a history that stretches over 2,500 years. It has seen the rule of seven different dynasties and was once a bustling hub along major trade routes. The city’s diverse cultural heritage, which blends Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Islamic traditions, makes it an invaluable cultural treasure. Vadnagar remained relatively unnoticed until Narendra Modi, born here, became India’s Prime Minister, bringing the city into the national spotlight and highlighting its potential as a tourism destination.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state government is focusing on both preserving Vadnagar’s heritage and enhancing its infrastructure. Collaborative research by institutes such as IIT Kharagpur, IIT Guwahati, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Roorkee is helping to uncover and promote Vadnagar’s historical significance.

Recognising Vadnagar’s tourism potential, the Gujarat Government has worked to enhance its appeal, including the introduction of the Buddhist Circuit, which passes through the city. Excavations by the Gujarat Archaeological Department have uncovered the remains of a Buddhist monastery. Modi's vision also led to the upgrading of the Vadnagar Railway Station for easier tourist access and the rejuvenation of Sharmishtha Lake, which now offers boating and an open-air theatre for visitors.

In 2003, Narendra Modi launched the Tana-Riri Music Festival to honour Vadnagar’s legendary sisters, Tana and Riri, who famously soothed Tansen with their Malhar Raag. The festival has since grown in prominence and includes the annual 'Tana-Riri' award for classical musicians. Modi also laid the foundation for a modern hospital in Vadnagar, ensuring better healthcare for the local community. These efforts have elevated Vadnagar as a prominent tourist hub in Gujarat, and now Amit Shah is set to inaugurate additional projects to further bolster the city’s growth and tourism appeal.

Among the key projects, Shah opened the Archaeological Experience Museum, India’s first of its kind. This museum, built at an estimated cost of Rs 298 crore, spans over 12,500 square meters across four floors. It showcases more than 5,000 artefacts discovered during excavations in Vadnagar, offering an immersive experience with interactive exhibits and audio-visual displays. The museum also houses 9 thematic galleries covering art, sculptures, and linguistic heritage from different historical periods.

Shah also inaugurated ‘Prerna Sankul’, a Rs 72 crore project focused on revitalising the historic school where Prime Minister Modi received his early education. Established in 1888, the school has been modernised while retaining its moral values. It now serves as a centre for student inspiration, offering a curriculum developed by IIT Gandhinagar, and it welcomes students from across the nation for week-long study tours.
