DP World and Reliance Industries Shift Petrochemical Logistics to Rail
2025-03-25
DP World and Reliance Industries have introduced a rail-based logistics solution to enhance petrochemical transport efficiency while reducing carbon emissions. This shift from road to rail offers a more sustainable and cost-effective supply chain alternative.
The new logistics model connects Reliance Industries' Jamnagar facility in Gujarat to DP World’s inland container depot (ICD) in Ahmedabad, ensuring seamless transport to Mundra Port. Previously, petrochemical shipments travelled 700 km by road from Jamnagar to Mundra. The new approach retains the same distance but replaces long-haul trucking with rail transport along the Ahmedabad-Jamnagar-Mundra corridor, eliminating logistical challenges associated with road transport.
By consolidating up to 45 containers per rail movement, this system reduces reliance on road trailers and drivers, cutting logistics costs and improving export timelines. The shift eliminates 700 km of road transport per container, lowering emissions and supporting Reliance’s environmental goals.
This initiative strengthens the decade-long collaboration between Reliance Industries and DP World’s subsidiary, Unifeeder, which serves as Reliance’s primary logistics provider. By integrating DP World’s rail services and Ahmedabad ICD, Unifeeder ensures efficient operations, with plans to expand capacity further.
