Rs 92.8 Mn Water Supply Project for Srinagar Awaits Govt Nod

The vital Rs 92.8 Mn water supply augmentation project for Srinagar’s Dal Bund area remains awaiting government clearance, as the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is yet to be approved and funding not yet allocated.

The project, intended to upgrade the contingency water supply plant at Dal Bund through the procurement and installation of electromechanical equipment, was tabled in the ongoing J&K Legislative Assembly by MLA Tariq Hameed Karra via a starred question.

In a written reply, the Jal Shakti Department confirmed receipt of the proposal from the Executive Engineer, Mechanical Division, Srinagar. However, the DPR was returned to the concerned division for “clarification of certain observations.”

“The proposal shall be processed further only after these observations are addressed. Once the DPR is approved, the source of funding will be explored accordingly,” the department stated.

The project involves replacing a worn-out 700 mm diameter rising main pipeline and overhauling outdated pumps and electrical systems that are essential for the smooth functioning of the existing water supply infrastructure.

Despite the urgency, procurement has not yet commenced, and no definitive timeline for implementation has been set. With the summer months approaching, residents of Dal Bund remain concerned about continued water supply interruptions.

The government has tentatively estimated that the works will be completed within one financial year from the date of approval—provided that DPR clarifications are resolved and funding is secured in due course.
