Volvo Unveils First-Ever Electric Articulated Dump Trucks

Volvo Construction Equipment has revealed the world’s first battery-powered articulated dump trucks entering serial production — the A30 Electric and A40 Electric, with payload capacities of 29 and 39 metric tonnes, respectively. According to Volvo, the electric models deliver performance on par with their diesel counterparts but with significantly fewer emissions, reduced noise, and lower operator vibration. They also incorporate enhancements from Volvo’s next-generation articulated hauler lineup. The trucks boast runtimes of 4 to 4.5 hours per charge under normal conditions, with up to 7 hours achievable in light-duty operations. Charging from 20 per cent to 80 per cent takes around one hour using a fast charger. Operators can monitor charging status, machine hours, and energy consumption using the My Equipment app. Volvo estimates that carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by 84 per cent for the A30 Electric and 90 per cent for the A40 Electric across the vehicles' lifespans, compared to diesel versions. The hauliers will be launched on a limited basis in Europe next year, with broader production planned thereafter. This launch marks a significant step in Volvo’s efforts to decarbonise construction sites. “These electric haulers combine the performance our customers expect with environmentally responsible technology,” said Mats Sköldberg, Head of Technology at Volvo CE. “We are proud to introduce the world’s first battery-electric articulated trucks of their size class, setting a new benchmark in sustainable heavy equipment.”
