Chhattisgarh Deploys Hydrogen Truck for Coal Transport
Chhattisgarh has become the first Indian state to introduce a hydrogen-powered truck for coal mining logistics. Deployed at the Gare Pelma III coal block in Raigarh district, the fuel cell vehicle represents a major step towards decarbonising industrial transport.
Each truck, developed under a public-private partnership, is equipped with three hydrogen tanks and smart technology, enabling it to carry forty tonnes across two hundred kilometres. Emitting only water vapour and warm air, the truck eliminates particulate pollution and reduces noise, offering environmental and safety benefits. The initiative aligns with India’s goals to reduce fossil fuel dependency and cut crude oil imports.
Unlike battery-operated electric vehicles, hydrogen trucks offer longer range and greater payload capacity, making them ideal for mining and logistics. This pilot also complements India's broader push for clean energy in heavy industries. The same company leading this rollout has pioneered semi-autonomous dozer push technology in Asia, highlighting its innovation-driven approach.
This model could guide other mineral-rich states seeking to transition to sustainable practices. As hydrogen infrastructure expands across India, the Chhattisgarh pilot signals a shift towards a cleaner, more efficient industrial ecosystem.
