Greenfield Airport Approved to Boost Puri Tourism
2025-05-14

The central government has granted in-principle approval for a greenfield airport near Puri, Odisha, aiming to enhance religious tourism and regional development. Estimated at Rs 56.31 billion, the Shree Jagannath Airport will be located near Sipasarubali and Sandhapur villages, covering over 1,100 acres.
Planned as part of the UDAN scheme, the project is expected to significantly reduce travel time for pilgrims, tourists, and business travellers, especially during events like the Rath Yatra. With the city currently dependent on Bhubaneswar’s airport, sixty kilometres away, the new airport will improve accessibility and encourage tourism-related investment.
The development blueprint includes energy-efficient terminals, solar generation, rainwater harvesting, and green building practices. Experts stress the need for strong environmental assessments given the site’s coastal location.
Employment generation, local entrepreneurship, and inclusive economic benefits are key goals. State officials emphasise the airport’s role in linking major heritage sites like the Jagannath Temple and Konark Sun Temple.
Equity-focused land acquisition and community consultation are underway to ensure fair compensation and resettlement. Designed to reflect Odisha’s spiritual identity, the airport will symbolise how infrastructure can support both heritage and progress.
