Gujarat Allocates Rs 22 Bn to Boost Urban Infra

The Gujarat government has approved an allocation of Rs 22.04 billion under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana (SJMMSVY), aimed at revitalising urban infrastructure across the state. This funding supports a wide array of projects, including road construction and widening, underground drainage systems, stormwater lines, gardens, libraries, recharge wells, city beautification, identity-based projects, and the strengthening of social infrastructure.

The initiative is part of Gujarat’s broader vision to foster eco-friendly, inclusive, and resilient urban centres. Declaring 2025 as the ‘Urban Development Year’, the state has reiterated its commitment to comprehensive and sustainable city planning.

Launched in 2009–10, SJMMSVY has played a pivotal role in upgrading urban services, with a particular focus on water supply and sanitation. Flagship projects include the ‘Nal Se Jal’ scheme to ensure daily tap water access, the construction of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), and the integration of solar power to improve energy efficiency.

The programme is spearheaded by the Gujarat Urban Development Mission (GUDM), the Gujarat Municipal Finance Board, and local municipal bodies. Notably, the state government is providing full financial support for all projects under the scheme.

By addressing the diverse needs of urban populations and prioritising essential services, Gujarat aims to create cities that are not only functional and efficient but also environmentally conscious and socially equitable.

This substantial funding commitment reflects the government’s determination to build urban spaces that serve as models of sustainability, economic vibrancy, and inclusive growth for other regions to follow.
