NMDC Drives Rural Transformation Through Education Initiatives

NMDC, India’s largest iron ore producer and a Navratna PSU, is quietly transforming rural India through its long-standing investment in education. With a total CSR contribution exceeding Rs 26 billion over the past two decades, NMDC has channelled more than Rs 6.9 billion into education initiatives alone, supporting over 1 lakh students annually in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka.

“At NMDC, community development is a core part of our identity. By significantly increasing our CSR contribution in education year after year, we are educating not just an individual but a whole family, their generation, and their society,” said Shri Amitava Mukherjee, CMD, NMDC.

Flagship programmes such as Astha Gurukul, Saksham Schools, and Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in Bhansi and Nagarnar are empowering students, particularly in areas like Bastar, Dantewada, and Bellary. Astha Gurukul has educated over 12,000 students affected by extremism, while the inclusive Saksham Campus supports over 4,000 specially-abled children.

NMDC’s efforts also extend to infrastructure development, including a 150-acre Education City in Geedam, offering a spectrum of learning from primary school to professional courses. The Polytechnic College in Dantewada, and ITIs at Nagarnar and Bhansi, have equipped rural youth with industry-relevant skills. Graduates have secured jobs at reputed companies like Bajaj, Ashok Leyland, and Krishna Maruti.

The Balika Shiksha Yojana has grown from supporting 25 tribal girls to nearly 600 beneficiaries. NMDC also operates residential schools in Nagarnar and Bastar for first-generation learners and supports mid-day meals for around 8,000 children annually.

Scholarships under Balika Shiksha Sahyog Yojana have benefitted over 1.5 lakh students, with up to 18,000 scholarships awarded each year. More than 4,000 students have been supported through NMDC’s Education Improvement Programmes, including over 2,000 girls.

One of its latest initiatives, the Science Centre in Dantewada—recently acknowledged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mann Ki Baat—serves as a hub of innovation in a previously conflict-ridden area. Equipped with 3D printers and robotics labs, it offers hands-on learning for local families.

From classrooms to careers, NMDC continues to bridge educational gaps, embodying its 3S approach—Sustainable, Scientific, Spreading Smiles.
