Assam Approves Rs 3.9 Billion Road Project to Boost Hill District Connectivity

In a landmark decision to enhance connectivity and promote tourism in Assam’s hill districts, the state government has approved a major road infrastructure project worth Rs 3.875 billion for Dima Hasao. This represents the highest investment ever made by Assam in the region.

The ambitious initiative involves the construction and upgrading of 348 kilometres of roadways across five key routes within the district, with plans to develop these roads to national highway standards. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the project following a state cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

“In Dima Hasao, five roads have been identified for upgrade to national highway specifications. This will significantly improve connectivity and unlock the district’s tourism potential,” CM Sarma said.

He added that the Rs 3.875 billion sanction marks a historic investment in the hill district, with work set to begin once the ongoing flood situation improves.

Funding for the project will be jointly shared by the Central and state governments, with the Centre covering 80 per cent of the cost and Assam contributing the remaining 20 per cent.

Additionally, the Assam Cabinet sanctioned Rs 1.45 billion to the Mega Mission Society under the Chief Minister Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana. These funds will support flagship initiatives such as the Chief Minister’s Atmanirbhar Asom Abhiyan, Mukhya Mantri Matri Vandana Yojana, paddy procurement schemes, Amrit Sarovar projects, and the establishment of milk processing facilities in Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Dhemaji districts.

The Cabinet also approved Rs 843 million in funding for the Bodoland Territorial Council for the 2025–26 financial year to advance developmental projects and socio-economic growth within the Bodoland Territorial Region.

To improve administrative efficiency in law enforcement, 35 Superintendent of Police posts have been redesignated as Senior Superintendent of Police across various districts. This restructuring aims to strengthen leadership within Assam Police amid recent administrative changes and the formation of co-districts.
