PMC to Start Phase 2 of Ganeshkhind Road Widening to Ease Traffic

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to commence the second phase of the Ganeshkhind Road widening project, covering the stretch between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Sancheti Hospital. This initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion along the heavily used corridor and follows the successful completion of the first phase from Pune University Chowk to RBI. The earlier phase was undertaken to support the construction of Pune Metro Line 3's double-decker flyover by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

The upcoming stretch measures approximately two kilometres, compared to the one-kilometre segment completed earlier. A total of 52 properties lie along the new section, out of which 12 have already handed over land to PMC. Key properties pending land acquisition include the Agriculture College, Rahul Theatre, the police headquarters, Shivajinagar police chowky, part of the College of Engineering Pune (CoEP) hostel, Hardikar Hospital, the LIC building, and the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.

The PMC’s land and estate department has initiated discussions with both private and government entities to facilitate land acquisition. The estimated cost of the road widening project is Rs 580 million, excluding land acquisition expenses, which are being assessed separately.

Ganeshkhind Road is a vital arterial route connecting major locations such as Pune University, Shivajinagar, and the Pune railway station. The ongoing double-decker flyover project by PMRDA features a two-tier structure with a vehicular flyover on the first level and a metro viaduct on the second.
