LANXESS Resin Removes Short-Chain PFAS From Water

Speciality chemicals company LANXESS has launched Lewatit MDS TP 108, a new ion exchange resin designed for the efficient removal of short-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water. These PFAS compounds—characterised by having three or fewer carbon atoms—are among the smallest and most challenging to eliminate through conventional water purification methods.

Lewatit MDS TP 108 marks a significant advancement in the treatment of contaminated water, particularly where traditional technologies such as activated carbon adsorption fall short. The new resin offers a service life approximately twice as long as existing ion exchange resins or activated carbon systems. This extended durability translates into reduced operational costs, as users benefit from lower material usage and less frequent disposal requirements.

“Lewatit MDS TP 108 sets new benchmarks in water purification and perfectly complements our existing solutions for PFAS removal,” said Dr Dirk Steinhilber, Application Technology Manager at LANXESS’s Liquid Purification Technologies business unit. “At the same time, it contributes to safeguarding water as a critical and valuable resource.”

The new product reflects LANXESS’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in sustainable technologies. By improving the efficiency of water treatment and reducing the ecological footprint of filtration processes, Lewatit MDS TP 108 supports industries seeking to meet stricter water quality standards and reduce long-term costs.
