DDA Demolishes 200 Illegal Units in Ashok Vihar Clear-Out

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has demolished over 200 unauthorised structures in Ashok Vihar’s Block-A as part of a renewed demolition drive targeting encroachments on public land. The operation, conducted in the early hours, focused on clearing informal commercial units, temporary shelters and illegal extensions built within the area.

Officials indicated that the structures, most of which lacked statutory permits, were occupying DDA-owned public land and were removed to facilitate plans for urban redevelopment and infrastructure enhancement. Temporary barricades were installed to maintain order during the demolition, with local law enforcement present on site.

Residents and vendors impacted by the action were evicted and provided notices, while some had reportedly established semi-permanent shops and kiosks for over a decade. A few owners sought legal recourse, but no stay orders were issued to halt the operation.

The clearance has opened space for future DDA initiatives—including formalised vending zones and improved public amenities—outlined in the authority’s urban redevelopment strategy. Officials reassured that the drive was in accordance with existing land management policies aimed at reclaiming public space.

This action is part of a broader campaign to strengthen Delhi’s urban planning and land-use regulations. Officials emphasised that such drives are necessary to prevent unauthorised occupation and ensure that public land is utilised in line with master plans and community needs. Provisions to compensate or rehabilitate affected local vendors are also being considered where applicable, to guide redevelopment in a balanced and inclusive manner.
