Goa Nears Completion of 250 Affordable Houses Under PMAY Scheme
2025-07-07

The Goa government has completed the construction of 250 houses out of a target of 254 for eligible beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), an official announced on Thursday.
The affordable housing project has been implemented at a total cost of Rs 340 million, said P K Shirodkar, nodal officer in charge of the scheme and director of the District Rural Development Agency. He noted that the remaining four houses are expected to be finished within the next two to three months.
The scheme, a flagship initiative of the Central Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to provide affordable homes to eligible rural households. Funding for the project is shared between the Centre and the state in a 60:40 ratio.
Shirodkar highlighted the need to increase the disbursement amount, currently Rs 120,000 to better reflect the higher construction costs in Goa. “For example, building a house of 50 square metres requires at least Rs 1 million to Rs 1.5 million,” he explained.
With the current target nearly achieved, the state government has begun surveying eligible beneficiaries for the ongoing financial year.
Beneficiaries like Mathura Vithal Desai from remote Advalpal village in North Goa praised the scheme. She described how her six-member family previously lived in a mud house vulnerable during rains and to snakes. “After applying for PMAY, we received funds and invested our savings to build a proper house,” she said.
Similarly, Rohini Rohidas Kuttikar from Odlebhat near Panaji expressed gratitude for the government’s support through PMAY, which enabled her family to construct their home.
