Tamil Nadu Sanctions Rs.74.3 Billion for Roads, Bridges

Chennai, 8 July 2025 – The Government of Tamil Nadu has issued two Government Orders (G.O.s) authorising road and bridge infrastructure projects worth a combined Rs 7,430 crore (approx. £701 million or USD 890 million).
The rural development department will spend Rs 505.56 crore (approx. £48 million) on constructing 100 high-level bridges across the state, while the state highways department will allocate Rs 6,929 crore (approx. £653 million) for the development of 3,268.53 km of highways under various schemes.
Bridges to Meet Local Connectivity Needs
Out of 321 proposed bridges by the Commissioner of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, 100 have been selected for construction following field assessments. These were prioritised through:
Public requests via the ‘Ungal Thoguthiyil Muthalvar’ scheme
Long-standing regional demands
Their potential to reduce travel distance between key localities
Major Road Projects under CMRDP and Other Schemes
From the Rs 6,929 crore highways allocation:
8 Rs 2,091.65 crore will be used to widen 1,378.36 km of roads under 619 projects
9 Rs 1,646.5 crore is designated to upgrade 253.46 km of two-lane roads to four-lane roads under the Chief Minister Road Development Programme (CMRDP)
10 Rs 978 crore will fund the construction of 19 bypass roads spanning 97.31 km
The remaining funds will go toward:
1 Strengthening existing two-lane and four-lane roads
2 Developing industrial roads
3 Enhancing road safety infrastructure
4 Building river bridges, and supporting district-level development works
Both G.O.s reflect the government’s commitment to improving rural and regional connectivity, enhancing safety, and facilitating economic growth.
