Tata Power, NHPC Partner For Battery Storage in Kerala
2025-07-21

Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) has signed its first Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) with NHPC to deploy a 30 MW/120 MWh system for Kerala State Electricity Board.
Planned for Kerala’s 220 kV substation, the system aims to support peak power demand and facilitate renewable integration. The 12-year agreement is part of NHPC’s 500 MWh BESS plan, supported by Viability Gap Funding.
This initiative supports India’s target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030. TPREL, with 10.9 GW in renewable capacity, is already operating a similar solar+BESS project in Chhattisgarh.
This marks Tata Power’s debut in standalone battery storage.
