RVNL Completes Survey for Purple Line’s Eden Gardens Stretch

In a major development for Kolkata’s metro commuters, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has completed the survey for a 1.6-kilometre extension of the Purple Line from Esplanade to Eden Gardens. The survey followed a special clearance from Raj Bhavan, as the alignment will run close to the Governor’s residence lawns before reaching the site of the fifth underground station of the corridor.
Officials noted that such surveys are essential to assess terrain, soil conditions, and project feasibility, which ultimately shape construction techniques and costs.
Currently, the Purple Line spans 14.4 kilometres from Joka to Esplanade. Once the new extension is added, the total route will extend to 16 kilometres, including a total of 13 stations—eight elevated and five underground.
With the addition of Eden Gardens, the total underground stretch will increase from the present 5 kilometres to 6.6 kilometres. This development is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters working in key areas such as Strand Road, Babughat, Calcutta High Court, and BBD Bag, as well as sports fans visiting Eden Gardens.
The Eden Gardens station will offer connectivity to both the Blue Line (North-South Corridor) and Green Line (East-West Corridor), significantly enhancing network integration.
At present, only the Joka to Taratala section is operational, while construction continues on the Esplanade segment. A southern expansion from Joka to IIM, covering 1.2 kilometres, is also under consideration.
