Piyush Goyal Inaugurates Expanded ISA Building at Intellectual Property Office

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, today inaugurated the newly expanded International Searching Authority (ISA) building at the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) in Dwarka, New Delhi, marking a major step forward in India’s intellectual property ecosystem.

Addressing the gathering, Goyal highlighted that innovation has been central to India’s heritage for centuries, citing the engineering brilliance of the Konark Temple as a historic example. He emphasised that innovation is not just intellectual property but a symbol of sovereignty, and a key driver in India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Goyal underlined the role of research, new ideas, and technology in driving prosperity, noting that the expanded IPO facility will strengthen India’s position as a global leader in intellectual property administration.

Union Minister of State for Commerce & Industry, Jitin Prasada, commended India’s rapid progress under the Prime Minister’s leadership, noting that the country is emerging as a talent hub for electronics, IT, and semiconductors.

Originally built in 2014, the ISA/IPEA building has now been renovated and expanded from two to seven floors, increasing capacity from 200 to over 700 personnel. Spread across 140,120 sq ft, the Rs 880 million project features modern workspaces, dedicated sections for patents, designs, copyrights, and trademarks, as well as examination halls and international affairs divisions.

The seventh floor houses a state-of-the-art International Training Centre with fully equipped halls, high-speed internet, and advanced digital tools for capacity building of IP professionals. The eco-friendly design includes rainwater harvesting, a sewage treatment plant, and plant waste decomposers, reducing operational costs and supporting sustainable development goals.

The expansion reaffirms the Government’s commitment to strengthening India’s IP infrastructure, supporting its role as an International Searching Authority and International Preliminary Examining Authority under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).
