BRO Launches Rs 12 Billion Plan For Ladakh Roads

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has unveiled a Rs 12 billion plan to improve Ladakh’s connectivity under Project Vijayak, which marked its 15th Raising Day in Kargil on 21 September. The initiative will involve widening vital roads, building new tunnels and bridges, and deploying advanced technologies including geotextiles, slope stabilisation, digital monitoring, eco-friendly construction methods, and upgraded surfacing.
The projects are designed to strengthen resilience and provide year-round access to high-altitude forward areas of Ladakh. Since its inception in 2010, Project Vijayak has built and maintained over 1,400 km of roads and 80 major bridges across the region. It also achieved the record-setting reopening of the strategic Zojila Pass in April 2025, just 31 days after its winter closure, a first in high-altitude connectivity, according to the Ministry of Defence.
The ministry noted that Project Vijayak was tasked with linking Ladakh’s remote valleys and forward areas with the national mainstream, supporting both military operations and civilian development. Its work has not only bolstered operational readiness but also transformed local connectivity and livelihoods.
Project Vijayak also emphasises the welfare of its Casual Paid Labourers, regarded as the backbone of its efforts. Welfare measures include insulated shelters, improved sanitation, protective gear, winter clothing, and regular health camps to ensure their safety and well-being.
