Chennai to Get Two New Bridges to Ease Traffic Congestion

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to inaugurate two new bridges in the city, promising relief to thousands of motorists and commuters by improving connectivity in Nolambur, Ezhil Nagar, Tondiarpet, and surrounding areas.

The Ezhil Nagar Road Over Bridge (ROB) in north Chennai will ease traffic for residents of Tondiarpet, Ezhil Nagar, Kodungaiyur, and nearby neighbourhoods, while the Nolambur Sannathi Nagar bridge will provide a faster route to Poonamallee High Road, cutting down travel time for local residents.

A senior GCC official confirmed that the Nolambur Sannathi Nagar bridge, spanning 120 metres in length and 12 metres in width, has been completed at a cost of Rs 31.65 crore. The bridge features a 7.5-metre-wide roadway and 2.5-metre footpaths on both sides, with a park under construction nearby. Residents say the bridge will significantly reduce detours caused by monsoon flooding in the area.

Construction on the Ezhil Nagar ROB began in 2023, with an estimated cost of Rs 105 crore. While most work from GCC’s side is complete, final touches, including bowstring works by the railways, are expected by the end of September. Once operational, the ROB will ease congestion along Tondiarpet High Road and Ezhil Nagar streets, allowing commuters to reach Ennore High Road more efficiently.

Residents have welcomed the bridges, noting that travel times, particularly during monsoons, will be greatly reduced. The GCC expects both bridges to play a key role in improving traffic flow, enhancing connectivity, and reducing travel delays for thousands of daily commuters.
