Tripura Plans Power Export to Nepal, Awaits Centre’s Nod

Tripura is preparing to export surplus electricity to Nepal and is awaiting approval from the Union Ministry of Power. Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said the state has already achieved surplus generation through its gas-based and renewable projects, enabling it to explore cross-border energy trade.

The proposed export aligns with India’s policy to integrate regional power markets, particularly in the North East. Tripura currently supplies power to neighbouring states such as Mizoram and Manipur and is eyeing new revenue opportunities through international sales.

Nath added that the state government has submitted the proposal to the Centre for necessary clearance. Once approved, Tripura will join Assam and Sikkim among the North Eastern states contributing to India’s regional electricity cooperation with Nepal and Bangladesh.
