Tata Communications Revives Nagan Thangal Lake in Tamil Nadu
Tata Communications, in partnership with Pitchandikulam Forest, has rejuvenated Nagan Thangal Lake in Upparapalayam village, Tamil Nadu, transforming the 15.01-acre site into a thriving ecological and community hub. Launched in 2022 under *Project Nanneer* (“good water” in Tamil), the initiative has improved water security, biodiversity, and community engagement, as per a recent study by the Watershed Organisation Trust Centre for Resilience Studies (W-CReS).
Once a vital but neglected water source for 2,800 residents, the lake’s capacity had dropped by 75 per cent. Through land shaping, desilting, and planting over 4,000 native species, the project increased storage capacity from 2.6 to 8.5 million litres and tripled groundwater recharge. The restored ecosystem now supports 14 fish, 56 bird, and 33 butterfly species.
The site attracts over 11,500 annual visitors and serves as an ecological education hub for local schools. Mukul Kumar, Vice President (EOHS & Sustainability), Tata Communications, said the initiative showcases the company’s commitment to people and the planet. The project benefits nearly 12,000 residents—60% from marginalised communities—by improving water supply, recreation, and climate resilience, ensuring long-term ecological sustainability for the region.
