KMRL Initiates Hydrology Study for Water Metro Link to Kochi Airport
2025-10-30
In a major step toward enhancing multimodal connectivity, Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) has initiated a detailed hydrology study of the Chengal Canal near Nedumbassery to assess the feasibility of extending Water Metro services to Cochin International Airport (CIAL), The Times of India reported.
The study, expected to be completed within three months, will evaluate the canal’s navigability and potential for regular ferry operations. “Following the study, KMRL will submit a detailed proposal to the state government for developing the canal as a major waterway,” said Sajan P John, Chief Operating Officer of Kochi Water Metro.
The proposed route between Aluva and Nedumbassery aims to offer commuters a faster, congestion-free connection between the Metro and the airport. Once operational, the waterway will ease traffic along major road corridors and provide seamless integration with the Aluva Metro station and airport via a planned aerial walkway.
Covering an 8-km stretch along the Periyar River, the route may include direct or intermediate stops based on feasibility. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has also directed KMRL to extend the Water Metro model to other parts of Kerala and replicate it in major Indian cities.
With this initiative, Kochi Airport could soon achieve a first-of-its-kind triple-mode connectivity — integrating air, metro, and water transport.
