Thane Station To Get 15-Coach Trains By 2025

Thane station, a key interchange on the Central Line connecting Mumbai, Karjat, and Kasara, currently operates 12-coach trains that frequently run at full capacity. The extension will allow for longer trains, addressing chronic overcrowding during peak hours and ensuring smoother travel for passengers.

Under the new plan, Platform 2 will be widened by 16.15 metres, while Platforms 3 and 4 will each be lengthened by up to 40 metres. The design prioritises commuter safety, efficient crowd movement, and accessibility, reflecting Central Railway’s broader goal of modernising Mumbai’s rail network.

Officials noted that this project responds to long-standing appeals from passenger associations and residents who have faced severe congestion at Thane — one of India’s busiest railway stations. The new 15-coach trains will increase both seating and standing capacity, improve boarding and alighting flow, and significantly reduce waiting times during rush hours.

Every day, nearly half a million passengers pass through Thane station, often struggling to board overcrowded trains. The upcoming extension will therefore enhance convenience for office-goers, students, and daily travellers across Mumbai, Thane, Karjat, and Kasara, ensuring faster and safer commutes.

This project follows the successful widening of Platform 5 in May 2024, where modular construction increased width from 10 to 13 metres, improving passenger handling and proving the efficiency of modern engineering in crowded rail settings. The success of that upgrade laid the foundation for this larger-scale expansion without disrupting daily train services.

Similar modernisation efforts are underway on the Western Railway network, where passenger groups have urged for 15-coach trains between Virar and Dahanu. Railway officials have confirmed that work is ongoing to quadruple the 63-kilometre track on that route, paving the way for higher train frequencies.

These developments form part of Indian Railways’ broader vision to strengthen urban connectivity and commuter convenience in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. With the suburban rail system serving as the city’s backbone — connecting millions daily to work, education, and leisure — such expansions are critical to sustaining growth and reducing road congestion.

The Thane platform extension will also yield social and economic benefits, improving productivity through reduced commute times and supporting local businesses near the station. Moreover, encouraging rail travel over road transport contributes to lower emissions and aligns with India’s sustainable urban mobility goals.

Once completed by end-2025, the upgraded Thane station will join the list of suburban hubs ready for future high-capacity trains, symbolising India’s transition toward a modern, commuter-focused railway ecosystem.
