Mitsubishi Power Wins Boiler Upgrade Contract for O Mon 1 Plant

Mitsubishi Power, a power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, (MHI), has been awarded a contract to support the oil-to-natural-gas fuel conversion at the O Mon 1 Thermal Power Plant in Can Tho, southern Vietnam. As the OEM of the plant’s existing boiler, Mitsubishi Power will supply key equipment—including new gas burners—and implement a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to reduce NOx emissions and help the plant meet stricter environmental standards.

The O Mon 1 facility includes two 330 MW units that commenced operations in 2009 and 2015, with all major equipment originally supplied by Mitsubishi Power. The fuel conversion project is being undertaken by EVNGENCO2 under Vietnam Electricity (EVN), with EPC responsibilities handled by a consortium of LILAMA Corporation and EVNGENCO3. Mitsubishi Power will deliver core equipment, while Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific (Singapore) will provide engineering support and onsite technical services.

Makoto Fujita, Senior General Manager of MHI’s Steam Power Business Division, said, “As the OEM of O Mon 1, we are proud to contribute to Vietnam’s energy stability and its decarbonization goals through this important conversion project.”

This award follows Mitsubishi Power’s recent contract to supply two J-Series Air-Cooled (JAC) gas turbines for the adjacent 1,155 MW O Mon 4 GTCC power plant, scheduled for completion in 2028. Both projects align with Vietnam’s Power Development Plan VIII, which prioritizes diversifying the energy mix, reducing coal usage and expanding natural gas and renewables to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Akihiro Ondo, CEO and Managing Director of Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific, added, “Vietnam is one of the fastest-growing economies in ASEAN, and we remain committed to supporting its continued development through advanced energy solutions.”

Mitsubishi Power continues to expand the deployment of high-performance, reliable technologies to ensure stable electricity supply and accelerate global energy decarbonization efforts.
