Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway to open after 15 December

The much-awaited Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway is expected to open to the public soon, with officials indicating that the 63 km stretch could become operational anytime after 15 December, according to a Times of India report.

Developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the expressway will significantly reduce travel time between the two major Uttar Pradesh cities — from the current two hours to just over an hour.

A senior NHAI officer from the Lucknow project implementation unit said, “We have informed higher authorities that the project is complete and can be opened for public use. We are awaiting final clearance and confirmation of the inauguration date.”

Project Details

According to officials, construction of the expressway is 99 per cent complete. It connects Sarojininagar on the outskirts of Lucknow to Shuklaganj in Unnao, near the Ganga River. Designed for a maximum speed of 120 km/h, the access-controlled corridor will provide smooth and uninterrupted travel between the two cities.

Trial runs have already been conducted to test the safety and performance of the carriageway. The route features both elevated and at-grade sections, with special safety measures in place to prevent accidents involving stray animals.

Future Connectivity

To support future traffic growth, an interchange has been planned to link the Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway with the upcoming Ganga Expressway. This connection will enable seamless movement across major transport corridors in Uttar Pradesh, enhancing overall regional connectivity.
