AP Clears Funds To Restore Bhogapuram Airport Water Outlets
The Andhra Pradesh government has approved Rs 270 million (Rs 27 crore) for the urgent restoration of four rainwater outlets at the under-construction Bhogapuram International Airport. The Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Ltd (APADCL) recommended immediate restoration of four outfall canals — OT1, OT2, OT4 and OT5 — involving improvement works and desilting.
According to a Government Order (GO) issued by Special Chief Secretary MT Krishna Babu, the state has sanctioned the expenditure after examination, directing that restoration of the four critical canals in Vizianagaram district be undertaken without delay.
The GO adds that the allocation is being drawn from the Rs 10 billion loan sanctioned by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd (HUDCO). The Water Resources Department will carry out the restoration work.
It further states that the airport’s master plan must account for overall site sustainability, including rainwater harvesting of at least 50 per cent of all onsite stormwater runoff. The harvested water may be used for aquifer recharge or irrigation. Since all the outlet points discharge runoff into external irrigation canals, their immediate restoration is necessary to ensure smooth floodwater discharge and prevent water stagnation.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu previously announced that the Bhogapuram International Airport is expected to be inaugurated in August 2026.
