Modi Says India Is Undergoing A Cultural Renaissance

He made the remarks while addressing a gathering after unveiling a 77-foot bronze statue of Lord Ram at Partagali in Cancona, South Goa, during Shree Samsthan Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt’s 550th year celebrations. According to the Goa government, it is the tallest statue of Ram in the world.

Mr Modi said the restoration and redevelopment of major religious sites reflect India’s renewed commitment to its cultural roots. “This renaissance will inspire future generations to stay connected to their heritage,” he added.

Referring to Goa’s past, the Prime Minister noted that there were periods when temples and local traditions faced destruction, and when the region’s language and cultural identity came under pressure. However, he said these hardships strengthened the people’s resolve. Goa’s culture, he added, has preserved its core essence through changing eras while continually renewing itself.

Praising the Mutt, Mr Modi said it has endured “countless cyclones of time” over the last 550 years. Despite shifting eras and societal transformations, the institution has remained a guiding force and continues to bridge tradition and modernity.

The Prime Minister emphasised that unity is essential for achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat (a developed India). “When society stands together, every region and every section contributes to a nation’s progress,” he said. The mission of the Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt, he added, aligns with this vision by connecting hearts and communities.

He also urged people to adopt nine resolutions: conserving water, planting trees, maintaining cleanliness, embracing swadeshi (use of indigenous products), practising Desh Darshan (travelling within India), adopting natural farming, leading a healthy lifestyle, practising yoga and sports, and helping those in need.

Mr Modi inaugurated a Ramayana-themed park at the event, noting that the additions will serve as centres of meditation, inspiration and devotion for future generations. He described time spent with sadhus and saints as a spiritually enriching experience and also visited the temple on the Mutt premises.

The ceremony was attended by Goa Governor Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Shrimad Vidhyadheesh Teerth Swami. The statue was crafted by renowned sculptor Ram Sutar, whose works include the Statue of Unity in Gujarat.

Shree Samsthan Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt, one of India’s oldest monastic institutions, holds a prominent place in the Saraswat community and is known for its spiritual, cultural and social contributions.
